That’s about as fast as your standard domestic commercial aircraft. Each piston outpaces those found in today’s Formula One cars.

The 90° Audi 5.2-liter V10 Fuel Stratified Injection (FSI®) engine was born from the necessity that its performance exceeded the lofty expectations of a supercar customer with every drive while still providing the refinement and smoothness of an Audi.

Its FSI® system was honed through development in Audi’s original Le Mans endurance racecars.

The R8 V10 engine is assembled in Győr, Hungary, Audi’s largest engine plant. In 2019, the plant produced approximately 1.97 million engines and electric motors for vehicles sold around the world, ranging from mass-produced 86-horsepower engines for overseas models to the 640-horsepower version of the 5.2-liter V10, tuned for different applications such as GT2 racecars.

Compared with a V8 engine of similar size, the V10 has smaller, lighter pistons, allowing it to rev more freely. Compared with a V12, it has fewer moving parts, reducing complexity and internal friction.

That, as noted below in the “Motorsports” section, is of utmost importance to the hundreds of R8 racecar customers around the world.

In U.S. tune, the current, street-legal R8 V10 Performance is able to make 602 horsepower at 8,100 rpm and 413 lb-ft of torque at 6,700 rpm.

 That speed and the firing pattern of the cylinders – 1 – 6 – 5 – 10 – 2 – 7 – 3 – 8 – 4 – 9 – give the Audi R8 a hissing tenor exhaust note that builds to a crescendo.

In turbocharged engines, a turbocharger can act as a sound muffler in the engine; the naturally aspirated 5.2-liter FSI® V10 wails, with its exhaust baffles opening at higher rpm for full effect.

The fact that the engine sits behind the driver and passenger further complements aural appeal.

The 5.2-liter FSI® V10 engine went into production in 2009, initially making 525 horsepower and serving as a higher engine option for the R8.

Like the entry 4.2-liter V8 engine at the time, which produced 420 horsepower, it was developed by what is now Audi Sport GmbH, the performance sub-brand of Audi, borrowing learnings from Audi’s Le Mans endurance racing efforts, including the design of the FSI® direct fuel-injection system.

Audi is celebrating the success of the V10 engine with the release of the Audi R8 V10 Decennium.

                  AUDI R8 5.2L V10 ENGINE

This limited-edition model features a powerful 456 kW (620 hp) V10 engine, with a combined fuel consumption of 13.1 l/100 km (18.0 US mpg) and combined CO2 emissions of 297 g/km (478 g/mi).

Only 222 units of this special edition will be produced to coincide with the sales launch of the new Audi R8.

The term “Decennium” comes from Latin and means “decade,” representing ten years of fascination on the road and achievement in motorsport.

The exterior design of the Audi R8 V10 Decennium clearly reflects its unique character. It is available as a coupé and is painted in an exclusive Daytona Gray matte finish.

The milled 20-inch wheels and the intake manifold of the 5.2 FSI engine are finished in matte bronze. The front spoiler, side sills, and diffuser are painted in gloss black, adorned with black Audi rings and badges.

The side blades and exterior mirror housings feature gloss carbon fiber. Additionally, buyers can choose from several exterior colors: Daytona Gray (pearl effect), Suzuka Gray (metallic), Floret Silver (metallic), Mythos Black (metallic), Ascari Blue (metallic), and Kemora Gray (metallic).

Inside, the Audi R8 V10 Decennium is completely finished in black, with gloss carbon fiber inlays providing striking accents.

The sports seats feature a quilted rhombus pattern in gloss black, complemented by contrasting stitching in a copper tone.

The selector lever and steering wheel, which has an Alcantara rim and a black 12 o’clock marking, also have copper-colored stitching, as do the center armrest, door armrest, and door rail.

A “Decennium” logo decorates the center console, doors, gloss carbon fiber door sill trims, and the logo projector.

Notably, the badge in the center console is designed to stand out visually, featuring a partially matte finish achieved through a patented process by Audi that roughens the material’s surface by a few thousandths of a millimeter using a special powder.

The door light projects the “Decennium” logo onto the ground, along with the model’s sequential limited-edition number. As with all R8 variants, the Audi virtual cockpit and MMI navigation plus come standard.

At the heart of the R8 V10 Decennium is the naturally aspirated 5.2 FSI engine, which offers an impressive 456 kW (620 hp) and a maximum torque of 580 Nm (427.8 lb-ft).

This powerful engine propels the edition model from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in just 3.1 seconds, reaching a top speed of 331 km/h (205.7 mph).

The Audi R8 V10 Decennium will be available starting in spring 2019, with a price tag of 222,000 EUR in Germany, which includes an exclusive car cover with bronze-colored “Decennium” embroidery.

The new Audi R8 will launch alongside the edition model. This high-performance sports car features a sharper exterior design and enhanced suspension and performance.

The volume-production model offers two naturally aspirated engines producing 419 kW (570 hp) and 456 kW (620 hp).

The interior has also been updated with new equipment options. The starting price for the R8 Coupé V10 quattro is 166,000 EUR, while the R8 Spyder V10 quattro begins at 179,000 EUR.

The performance variants start at 200,000 EUR for the Coupé and 213,000 EUR for the Spyder.

A decade of success has marked the V10 engine’s journey since it was introduced in the Audi R8 in early 2009, featuring two versions with a displacement of 5.2 liters, direct injection, and a maximum output of 386 kW (525 hp).
